Tags are of your own making, the same way they are in Evernote, and you can see all the tags you've created at any time with a drop down menu. There are really only three more features in Simplenote: tags, sharing, and version history. When you paste in formatted text, all the formatting is erased. If you paste in a hyperlink, it will remain as plain text. When you create a note in Simplenote, the top line becomes the title and everything that follows is text. Those tools are keystone features in Evernote and OneNote. You won't find any notebooks, sections, stacks, or other organizational tools, either. Otherwise, however, you get nothing but plain text.

Markdown is supported in the Web app, as well as the Android, Windows, and Linux apps, so you can add textual code that will translate elsewhere into bold, italic, and so forth.

Evernote and OneNote support all those other file types and a few more, like handwritten notes and images that you draw in the apps.Įven if you're okay with the fact that Simplenote only handles text notes, you'll find Simplenote keeps things the app simple beyond even that. The fact that it only supports text is a dealbreaker for some people who might be in the market for a note taking and syncing app. There are no options for creating or uploading audio notes, images, PDFs, or anything else. What's left of the screen is your blank canvas for a note. A few buttons appear at the top of the page, including a search bar, and a column at the left holds notes that accumulate as you create them. The interface in the Web app starts you out with a whole lot of white space. Creating an account requires nothing more than an email address and a password.

Zoho Notebook is another wholly free app, but it only has mobile apps at the moment, and they are pretty lightweight.

PCMag reviews Evernote Business ($12.00 at Software Advice) separately. Theoretically speaking, total storage is limitless because the storage accumulates month after month ad infinitum. The free tier limits you to syncing across only two devices, and you can only upload 60MB of data each month.

An Office 365 Personal account costs $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year.Įvernote accounts come in four tiers of service: Basic (free), Plus ($34.99 per year or $3.99 per month), Premium ($69.99 per year or $7.99 per month), and Business. Free users get 5GB of space, whereas Office 365 ($99.00 at Amazon) account holders get 1TB all told, shared among other Office Online apps. OneNote is also free with no special upgrades for extra features. Microsoft OneNote handles storage much as Google Keep does, using OneDrive for storage the same way Keep uses Google Drive. There is an upload limit for images of 10MB and 25MP. You can pay $1.99 per month for 1TB of storage, which will be shared across all Google apps. The amount of storage space you get in Keep is dependent on your Google Drive storage, which is 15GB by default. Google Keep, for example, is free with no upsells or special plans.

In fact, most apps have a generous free plan, Evernote aside. There are a few other note-taking apps that don't charge a dime. Simplenote doesn't support uploads, multimedia, or even formatting-just text-so you'd have a hard time abusing limitless storage with plain text. That's a less risky strategy than it might sound. There is no limit on storage, as long as you don't abuse it, according to the company's terms. Pricing and Plans Simplenote is free with no upgrades or in-app purchases. It's not going to win over those who use Editors' Choice Evernote, but it's a decent option if simplicity is your number-one concern. Even given its less-is-more emphasis, however, it's still missing some features I'd like to see. It has apps for all the major platforms, tags for helping you find notes, a reliable search tool, and two ways to share content. Simplenote works for those who focus best when they aren't any bells, whistles, or extraneous menu options to distract them. It mimics the sparseness of distraction-free apps, giving you little more than a place to jot down notes and sync them across your devices. They keep features to a minimum and target those who prefer to do more with less. But there is another class of simpler note-taking and syncing services that might be better defined as digital notepads with syncing included. The giants of the space, Evernote and OneNote, aim to do it all, offering rich features and support for multimedia. Not all note-taking apps are created equal.
